It has been said that many of the mathematical equations that describe the complex relationships of the forces in the universe can each be written on a single sheet of paper. These mathematical equations have been described as beautiful and elegant in their simplicity, compared to what we might otherwise expect in descriptions of things so complex.
Our sun is 400 times larger than our moon, yet also is 400 times distant, setting up nearly perfect solar eclipses. In the late 1800’s solar eclipses created the ability to discover the “flash spectrum” of light that opened up our understanding of how stars work. The electron microscope has enabled man to magnify by millions of times the microscopic world of living cells, leading to the discovery of a fantastic complexity of miniaturized biological machinery surpassing anything in our full-scale size manufacturing assembly-lines producing micro-chips and micro-circuitry. The earth’s atmosphere is transparently clear to allow for investigation of the cosmos, and our privileged location within the Milky Way Galaxy provides a clear and open view of the vast universe itself.
One of the axioms that is a foundation for all scientific investigation, which is remarkable in and of itself, is that the natural world that humans explore is orderly and intelligible. We accept this axiom as a starting, universal reality and take it for granted without much thought. Yet it did not have to be this way. The natural world could be in continual change and be too complex to understand. Stability allows us to draw conclusions and to formulate natural laws.
The fact that humans alone possess the matching intellect to be able to search out and understand such things as relativity, quantum mechanics, the “standard model” in physics, a black hole in outer space, and to be able to construct an atom-smasher “Big-Bang machine” to discover the Higgs-boson particle, adds to this remarkable reality.
Like the calculated precision of the arrangement of our solar system to create the extraordinary condition of solar eclipses leading to an understanding of star formation and modern astrophysics, a curious fact about the rock strata revealing the fossil remains of the Cambrian Explosion is that these deposits were all below the surface of the oceans in the ancient past. The Burgess Shale rock deposits in Western Canada, once below sea level, are now 7,000 feet above sea level, conveniently raised by geological uplifting over millions of years, providing easy access for intensive scientific analysis starting at the time of their full discovery in 1909.
The fossils of the Cambrian period discovered in the Yunnan Province in China in the 1980’s are incredibly clear, revealing even the soft body architecture of creatures in a way previously thought unimaginable in fossils usually preserved by skeletons only.
Add to this the recent scientific discovery that the current ocean floors are dated in the Jurassic period, much younger by hundreds of millions of years than the Cambrian strata now above sea level, and this could reasonably be interpreted as indirect evidence of God unreservedly serving up empirical data for human scientific evaluation…as opposed to an absentee watchmaker far removed from the antiquity of creation.
Christians knew in the first century that God did not create the natural world and then let it run on its own. The incarnation of Jesus Christ the Son of God into our natural world is divine participation on the most intimate level. The promise of Jesus to His disciples then and now is that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth (Jn. 16:13), and that He will never leave us (Mt. 28:20). The Old Testament Jewish prophets and scholars also knew that their God was the one, true living God who took an active role in the world at-large, and more specifically and sometimes spectacularly in the life of the nation of Israel.
Today there are millions of Christian foreign missionaries, pastors of churches, professors in Bible colleges, Christian apologists in theology and in the sciences, street evangelists to the homeless, people serving in prison ministries, people in all sorts of social services, in government, in health services, and in NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) to name only a few, who are experiencing God-composed journeys of faith.
These people may not have articulated their experiences in the terminology of this book to describe them as God-composed journeys of faith life-scripts, directly related to the journeys of faith recorded in the Bible. But even though there are millions of people across the globe engaged in genuine service to Jesus Christ, biblical-quality journeys of faith like these are comparatively rare in relation to the world’s total population. Journeys of faith through the way of the cross of Christ are not the general norm in our postmodern, self-seeking, materialistic (in the sense of acquiring material things), and philosophically relativistic culture.
These genuine journeys of faith therefore go unnoticed and unheralded by our culture (Mt. 6:1-8, 16-18). Nevertheless these are all real adventures of faith set up by God and orchestrated by His Spirit.
There are large numbers of Christians across the globe who know clearly their specific calling, and are diligently pursuing their missions within the danger zone of cross-bearing in sacrifice to others, some at great personal cost by foregoing worldly conventional normalcy, some at risk of physical harm, and some facing the real threat of imprisonment and death.
The born-again and Spirit-led Christian of today must recognize and take full ownership of their God-composed adventure of faith life-script, by listening in the Spirit and beginning the eternal reality of following Jesus as King and Ruler of the realm.
God is both Creator of the natural world and Redeemer-Guide of mankind in the spiritual/moral realm, and is and has been active in the affairs of mankind before we gained an understanding of natural phenomenon or a biblical journey of faith. Our God-composed journeys of faith are crafted by God without our initial collaboration because only God can mix the right blend of His supernatural participation into the events and circumstances of our lives, within the otherwise stable and coherent framework of the everyday activities of conventional normalcy.
The idea that God does not exist because the physical world appears to run independently of its own accord, is a faulty conclusion that only comes from the biased worldview thinking of the unbelieving skeptic. It is a conclusion drawn from personal ignorance about the existence of God and not from empirical scientific evidence that God does not exist. It does not reflect the true reality that born-again Christians have known for two thousand years about the existence of God and His direct participation in our lives.
