If as Spirit-born Christians we pick up our cross to follow Jesus…if we enter through the narrow gate of Matthew 7:13-14…God has life-scripts already pre-written for us because he wants to get it right…for us…for our sakes…not for Himself.
The brilliantly imaginative stories of faith in the Bible are above anything that we would come up with. The biblical narrative story of faith for Abraham was for Abraham…but also for millions upon millions of believers down to our own time…in number as the night stars in the sky (Gen. 15:5).
The God-composed life-script for Joseph in the Old Testament was written for Joseph…for his life…yet it also benefitted untold numbers of people at the time then…and down through the centuries to our own time.
The same can be said for the life of David, or Moses, or Hannah, or Esther, or Ruth, or any of the other brilliantly original life-scripts God composed for these people during their lifetimes…and as a pattern for God-composed life-scrips…for us.
As Saul/Paul approaches the city of Damascus…the brilliant light and voice of Jesus Christ that revealed to Paul the previously unimaginable reality of Jesus as the Messiah, Savior, and the Son of God…inaugurated an evangelical mission to spread the gospel message to the first-century Greco-Roman world. This was not only a new life-script beyond anything Paul could previously imagine…but this new mission in his life produced in Paul a new person who eventually write his timeless New Testament letters to the early churches…but also transform Paul into the loving person who could compose the closing chapter 16 of his letter to the Romans, the famous 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, and be described as the much beloved Christian missionary in Acts 20:36-38.
When Jesus meets Peter for the first time…Jesus calls Peter a stone (Jn. 1:42). At this very beginning of the calling of Peter, God has a brilliantly imaginative, challenging, and creative life-plan premeditated and pre-scripted for the life of Peter…beyond anything Peter could have anticipated or contrived in advance. This God-scripted life-plan was for the benefit of Peter…a blessing above and beyond anything Peter could or would have experienced or achieved as a common fisherman on the Sea of Galilee…but also an invaluable blessing to us as we follow the progress of Peter through the gospels, the book of Acts, and Peter’s New Testament epistle that has been a timeless inspiration and guide to Christians in the church age.
This is the heritage of an adventure of faith…composed by God for us…and for the benefit of others…that belongs to Spirit-born Christians today.
This is what we can expect if we surrender and yield ourselves to God’s leading in our lives…articulated beautifully in Proverbs 3:5-6…and again in Mark 8:34-35).
